Teatro dell’Olivo

The Teatro dell’Olivo is a theater located in Camaiore, in Versilia.

Located in the center of the capital, right next to the church of San Vincenzo, the Teatro dell’Olivo is one of the oldest in Lucca. In fact, its origin dates back to the mid-seventeenth century on the initiative of the Accademia dei Deboli which then restructured a wool spinning mill.

The theatre, which initially appeared as an adapted room, was restructured around 1770: the room took on an oval shape and was equipped with boxes.

In 1920, in addition to the transformation of the last tier of boxes and the gallery into a gallery, all the decorations were renewed by the painter Domenico Ghiselli. Like many other theaters of this size, after having suffered serious damage during the last world war and after the compensations carried out by the Civil Engineers, it still carried out a mainly cinematographic activity before its closure in the fifties.

After a long period of abandonment and after being acquired by the municipal administration, a vast structural and functional recovery project was started in the mid-1980s based on a project by the architect Riccardo Gizdulich.

In the last two years and with a financial commitment of around 2 million euros, the last phase of the works was also completed and finally in August 2003 what can be considered the oldest theater in the province was back in operation with a show dedicated to the artist Giorgio Gaber.
