Chiesa di San Giovanni Bosco (Viareggio)

The church of San Giovanni Bosco is a parish church in the Marco Polo district of Viareggio, in via Maroncelli 332, in the province of Lucca.

The church was built for the growing population of Viareggio in the Marco Polo district, which until then was included in the parish of San Paolino. For the religious service a small chapel had been set up in a garage in via Pola. Thanks to the interest of Mrs. Petri Morandi, the first mass was celebrated there on 20 February 1949. Don Roberto Picchi – in October of the same year took care of it and asked and obtained from the then archbishop of Lucca, Antonio Torrini, the foundation of a new parish, dedicated to San Giovanni Bosco. The construction works of the new parish church began on May 18, 1954 and ended on October 9, 1956. The church was consecrated by the Archbishop of Lucca on May 24, 1957. The structure is composed of a reinforced concrete framework, which composes a nave central and two side aisles, in addition to the presbytery area.

The facade, animated by semi-pillars, recalls the Pisan-Lucca Romanesque style in a modern key. The interior is decorated with mosaics, while the high altar, baptistery, balustrade, and railing of the choir loft are in white marble with elements in imperial red granite. The bell tower is ribbed and houses four small bells cast by the Lera foundry in Borgo Giannotti after the Second World War.

The parish priests of the parish of San Giovanni Bosco have the title of prior, according to diocesan provisions, as do the other parish priests of the city of Viareggio.
