The former church of the Redeemer and All Saints was an active Anglican place of worship in Viareggio from 1910 until it was definitively dismantled in 1977. Today the deconsecrated building houses a pizzeria.
History
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Viareggio was home to a thriving English community. Since 1900 a chaplaincy office was active which carried out religious functions in a room of the Hotel Paris et Soleil and in 1904 a new room was inaugurated in a private home.
In 1909 Countess Louise Jenison obtained permission to build a church on her own plot of land, between via Leonardo da Vinci and via della Costa (today via IV Novembre).
Work began on 1 November 1909, while the church was opened for worship on 25 December 1910. It should be noted that a small English cemetery was also opened in 1912 within the public cemeteries, which existed until 2001. After the death of the Countess, in 1931, the church passed to the Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe.
The English community steadily decreased in number, until it dispersed with the events of the Second World War. After the war the church was managed for some periods by the Waldensian church. Finally, in 1977 it was deconsecrated and sold.
